Hello, my name is Dorcas Akinniyi Jansen and welcome to Edgewood College’s Personal Counseling Services. I am thrilled to be a part of such an impactful organization here on campus as I continue my training as a mental health provider. I am in the midst of my third year at the UW-Madison’s Counseling Psychology Program, in fact, I have completed all of my schooling at UW-Madison including a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology as well as an M.S. in Counseling. I have had the pleasure of focusing my clinical work primarily on college populations and have so enjoyed working with clients managing self-esteem, depression, stress and anxiety, vocational matters, adjustment or life transitions, relationship concerns, and identity development.

As a clinician, I believe that when we are young we learn ways of coping in order to meet our needs in the moment. However, as we grow and develop, those same coping mechanisms may work less effectively when applied to distress in the here and now. I like to work with clients to gain insight related to their ways of coping and develop new, more flexible strategies. I hope to foster an environment where clients are free to come as they are, into a safe space, where they can expand their understanding of themselves while also working to achieve comfort, security, and happiness.

When I am not in school, teaching, or seeing clients, I like to eat, travel, do yoga, and spend time with friends and loved ones. I also love spending time with my two beautiful dogs, Boogie and Tango, who like to play with toys, watch TV, and take me on long walks throughout the neighborhood.
